This piece is part of the original Kindsight® series from 2004. Last week my Mom and sister Leslie ran into Nancy, who told them that Sid has been very sick, in the hospital for nearly six weeks. (continued below) I arrive in Miami last night and stop by the hospital today. I get Sid’s room number and go there, but the door is closed with a handwritten sign “No Visitors.” I go to the central desk and ask the nurse to let Sid know I stopped by. “Let me go and see if you can visit.” I really don’t want to bother Sid if he’s resting, but she goes into the room. A moment later, Nancy comes out. Her eyes say it all. “Hi Robert. Sid’s not doing well at all. He just had his second Bone Marrow Transplant and it’s not taking.” “I’m so sorry, Nancy.” “It seemed for a moment he was rallying, but now he’s doing bad. He can’t have any visitors, he won’t even know if I tell him you were here.” I gently squeeze her arm and she hugs me, letting go her tears and sobs. What can you say to someone in such a moment? So I just hug her. “I don’t know what I’d do without him” she softly cries. “My family and I are praying for you and sending love. If there’s anything we can do for you, PLEASE call, any time, day or night.” “Thank you Robert.” And she goes back in the room. Walking away, I flash back on the times Sid has attended my photo exhibit openings, full of enthusiasm and eager to promote my events. As recently as a few months ago, he showed up, dapper and smiling.

Please join me in praying for Sid and Nancy (the originals) tonight, and for anyone else you may know who needs prayers.

This is the second major hospital (Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles being the first), to mount a long-term installation of Kindsight pieces. To me, hospitals are well suited for Kindsight, as it celebrates human spirit and radiates healing energy.

For the past couple of months, I have been meeting with a group of high school students at the offices of Ultimate Life Living in downtown Los Angeles. It's a small group of young women, around age fifteen, who are students of my friend, teacher Alexandra Cornell. I've introduced them to the Kindsight way of connecting with the richness of everyday life around them through photography and writing together. We also talk about life, empowerment, mindfulness and understanding. The members of the Ultimate Life Living (Real Estate) team have all shared in our workshops, especially Flo White, the mother of Jim White (one of the company partners). Flo is a very hip and caring lady who shares the wisdom of her life experience with the students. The young ladies are all wonderful and special in their own ways. They are curious, attentive, present and quite intelligent. One of them, Griselda, was at first very shy about being photographed. But then, she gradually became more comfortable with being in front of the camera, enjoying and getting into it. Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised by an email from Ms. Cornell with these two Kindsight pieces done by Griselda. I remember from my own youth the profound effect that both encouragement and discouragement can have particularly at that time in life. It is so great to see Griselda embracing this project and also feeling good about herself. I hope to stay in touch through time and sense that she will have a positive, inspiring effect on others as she goes through life.

Robert Zuckerman, acclaimed photographer known for creating advertising and/or publicity images for such films as The Crow, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Any Given Sunday, Training Day, Bad Boys 2, National Treasure, Transformers, Pursuit of Happyness and many more, will be exhibiting his vintage fine art imagery (originally from the mid '70s to the early '90s) in a show called TIME MACHINE at the Hardcore Art Contemporary Space in Miami’s Design/Art District, from May 30 to July 4, 2009. There will be two receptions: first on Saturday May 30, 2009 and then on Saturday, June 13, 2009 as part of the Wynwood Gallery Walk.

Zuckerman is also known for his series called KINDSIGHT®, consisting of image-text pairings that illuminate the richness of everyday life through random encounters and moments. In addition to a coveted coffee-table book with a second volume on the way, Zuckerman has been featured on public television, and with KINDSIGHT® has spoken at schools across the country, including the Harvard University Medical School, about youth empowerment and possibility.

Says Zuckerman: “The work represented in TIME MACHINE is my version of being a ‘kid in a candy store,’ such was the experience of discovery, magic and promise. As a young, shy, inhibited boy, the camera early on held great appeal to me. It was a magic box with the power to create images, and it had the power, for me, to access and connect the inner and the outer worlds. Most of these images have been filed away for decades, and now, as I reconnect with them, I find that they have taken on an added dimension of power and meaning.”

And, says noted publisher and curator James Crump: “The artist cast his net wide in sometimes disparate representations, but they all reveal his deep fascination with interior states and the subconscious. With endless narrative potential, these photographs hauntingly foreshadow Zuckerman’s later work. Like Lee Friedlander, Joel Meyerowitz and William Eggleston, Zuckerman himself finds near tragic beauty at every street corner, and yet his pictures are tempered with optimism and light.”

A portion of the artist's proceeds from print sales will go to one or more charitable cause.
